Is Preschool Necessary?

Parents often feel pressurized to send their children to preschool, since many professional recommend that they do so. Additionally, those parents who do keep their children at home until elementary school may face disapproval of friends of family members.

On the other hand, there may be good reasons why a child may not go to preschool:-
  • If there is a new baby in the house, you may not want to send the older child to preschool, so as to avoid any feeling of rejection or being pushed out of the family setting.

  • You may have difficulty in finding a nursery school that seems suitable for your child.

  • You may simply not be able to afford nursery school.

  • You may simply prefer to be with your child full-time until regular kindergarten begins.
If you decide that you don't wish to send your child to preschool, there is no reason to feel guilty, and no need to worry that you child will become socially handicapped. Children have plenty of time and opportunities to associate with neighborhood children, siblings, and friends who may attend part-time programs. If you want, you can always enroll you child into weekly recreation classes – look around your local community and you may find short one-hour classes that range from once per week on up to every work day.

If your child stays at home, you can still keep him busy and involved, by providing him with an environment that he can play and explore with. You want to ensure that your child has enough toys to play with, enough children's books to read, and that you have scheduled plenty of outings with him. These are all of the same types of activities that he would be doing if he were attending preschool.

If you choose to send your child to a nursery type of preschool, then you will be amazed at how he changes and develops. Your child will become more cooperative and knowledgeable.

To summarize, preschool can be a very positive and beneficial experience, but it is not necessary for your child to attend. The key thing is, whether your child attends a preschool or not, is to make sure your child has to stimuli which will help him grow, learn and develop.
